LondonRecently I attended Pentecost 2012, a large celebration here in London. It was very interesting to see people form all backgrounds and walks of life sharing their faith.

LondonThis week images from The Europeans were featured on the New York Times Lens Blog. Needless to say I’m pretty excited that my work is reaching a larger audience. I’ve been working on this project for the past seven years and there have been many times where I felt I was toiling in obscurity to say the least. Getting a little recognition every now and then feels good.

LondonAfter a seven year absence I am back in London. When I began The Europeans my hope was not simply to capture Europe as it is but also as it changes over time. This week I returned to Parliament Square where I first met anti-war activist Brian Haw.
Brian Haw. London 2005
Sadly last year Brian died after more than ten years of spreading his message. I returned to the spot where I first met him and was pleasantly surprised to find that the movement has outlived the man.
Often I meet and photograph people having no idea of how important they are or will be to me or others. This project has been a real journey of discovery for me and perhaps more than anything has forced me to realize just how interconnected we are and the impact we have on each other’s lives.

I'm in Istanbul for a little while doing some research on a future project! It's a lovely city even if the weather is a little off right now. I'm looking forward to spending much more time here in the future but this visit is helping me understand just how much this nation bridges Asia and Europe...

In other news I've joined the World Policy Institute as a Project Leader! Some might think it odd that a photojournalist like myself has joined a think tank but I've always been interested in photography as a vehicle to drive discussion, not simply transmit information. If you missed it here's a link to an article I wrote and photographed for World Policy Journal about the asylum system in Austria

There is some good news today! I've been selected as a Knight Luce religion reporting fellow. From the release:Damaso Reyes will investigate the growth of European Pentecostalism led by immigrants from former European colonies. Reporting from Spain, England and Ukraine, Reyes will examine how Charismatic faiths are growing while traditional European Christian religious observance continues to decline. Reyes is a photographer and writer whose work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Der Spiegel, and The Christian Science Monitor.
I am looking forward to expanding the story I've been working on and seeing where it takes me!

One of the things I love about coming back to a story over time is how much deeper you can go...
